WordPress Websites: How Much?
Your WordPress website needs will be discussed and a price will be quoted based on the amount of work and/or complexity. Hourly maintenance at a later date is Β£25 p/h.
- Expect to pay Β£500 – Β£5,000 for an informational website (one that would generate leads/enquiries for services).
- Expect to pay Β£1,000 – Β£20,000 for an Ecommerce website (one that would sell physical/virtual products).
An initial consultation is free and can be done in person or via Skype.Β
What Type of WordPress Will Be Built?
I build most websites using WordPress, and work with both classic themes and Gutenberg block-based themes. The latest versions of WordPress have opened up the workflow using their full site editing experience (FSE) which has some good and bad points.
Despite this, and of all the content management systems (CMS) available, WordPress truly is an excellent open source middle tier solution with a bright future.
Because it’s open source, the basic code is free to download which can be tweaked, configured, optimised and turned into an amazing site. Pages can be edited by you, the end user, for simple things like certain text and images.
It’s easy to make mistakes without realising and it’s important to take regular database backups in the event of fatal errors.
In some ways, building and operating a WordPress website is a bit like having access to lots of free, high-quality building materials for the purposes of building a solid house. Obviously, this is a virtual construction, but you get the idea.
Classic Editor or Gutenberg?
I’m not keen on the fact that the newer block based themes don’t necessarily have a normal stylesheet, which means lots of inline CSS is injected into the MySQL database itself, instead of living in style.css
as was always the case.
Block style CSS usually means that all the style controls live in the stylesheet itself and can be adjusted en masse there. Instead, with the FSE, there’s too much fiddling with complicated individual styles (such as padding and margin) on certain design elements.
There are pros and cons to classic vs Gutenberg, but I have to say, I’ve seen amazing creative uses of Gutenberg blocks, and it actually does cut down on the sheer amount of plugins classic themes would need such as Contact Form 7.
Want to Build an Online Shop? Use WooCommerce
WooCommerce is a free eCommerce extension for WordPress and is the ideal method for creating your online shop. WooCommerce might not do everything you need it to do out-of-the-box, but it’s damn good! I mean, really good.
As much as I love WooCommerce, I’ve never built two online shops that are identical. There’s always different criteria and tricky requests which can result in someone painting themselves into a corner.
Depending on your requirements, certain other free and paid plugins may be required to open up the possibilities for what you want the online shop to do.
Complex Requirements Require Additional Upfront Investment in PluginsΒ
If for example, you want a membership or subscription site, you’d have to buy a license (usually charged annually) for a plugin/extension to provide the required functionality.
It’s normally good value for money, as you’ll have access to the support team who developed the third party plugin, and you’ll get security patches and new features for as long as you pay them.
It could be that you have complex shipping logistics. Maybe there are conditional requirements where one form of delivery would need to supersede another at checkout, depending on how much the customer is spending of the overall weight of the basket.
WooCommerce paid plugins need to be budgeted for, unless there’s a free alternative available (but be careful here β easy come, easy go).
